How to Prepare for the RTO Learner's Licence Test
VahanInfo TeamPublished 14 June 2026 • Updated 15 July 20261 min read
The learner's licence (LL) test is a short computer-based exam on traffic rules, signs, and penalties. Most states ask 15–20 multiple-choice questions with a pass mark around 60–70% — very passable with a few evenings of focused practice.
What the test covers
- Traffic signs — mandatory, cautionary, and informatory signs make up the largest share of questions. Study the full set on our traffic signs guide.
- Rules of the road — right of way, overtaking, lane discipline, signals.
- Penalties — fines for common offences under the MV Act, covered in traffic rules and penalties.
- Duties of a driver — accident response, documents to carry, emergency vehicles.
Booking the test
- Apply on the Sarathi portal (sarathi.parivahan.gov.in) with your state.
- Upload identity, address, and age proof (Aadhaar makes this fastest).
- Pay the fee and pick a slot — or choose the home-based online test where your state offers Aadhaar-authenticated testing.
- Appear for the test; results are shown immediately.
A practice strategy that works
Spend your first session in prepare mode — read every question with its answer and explanation, without scoring. Then switch to timed mock tests and repeat until you consistently score above 80%. The VahanInfo app has state-wise question banks in 12 languages, with both modes built in — try a few sample questions on the RTO exam page first.
After the learner's licence
Your LL is valid for 6 months. You can book the permanent driving test after 30 days. Use that window to practice the test-track manoeuvres — figure-eight for two-wheelers, reverse-S and parallel parking for cars — since many RTOs now use sensor-monitored automated tracks where precision matters.
