How to check PUC status

  1. Install the VahanInfo app

Get VahanInfo free on Google Play — PUC checks need no signup.

  2. Enter the vehicle number

Type the registration number as printed on the plate, for example MH12AB4321.

  3. Open the PUC section

The report shows whether the PUC certificate is valid and when it expires.

  4. Turn on expiry alerts

Save the vehicle to get a reminder before the certificate runs out — renewals take only a few minutes at any authorized centre.

Why PUC matters

Every vehicle on Indian roads must carry a valid PUC certificate proving its emissions are within permitted limits. Certificates are short-lived — usually six months — so they expire far more often than insurance or registration, and an expired PUC can mean a fine of up to ₹10,000. Regular emission checks also catch engine problems early, saving fuel and repair costs.

A healthy engine pollutes less. If your vehicle fails an emission test, a basic service is usually enough to bring it back within limits.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Install the VahanInfo app and enter the vehicle registration number. The vehicle report shows the PUC certificate status and its expiry date, with optional reminders before it lapses.

A brand-new vehicle's first PUC is valid for one year. After that, certificates are typically valid for six months, though validity can vary by state and vehicle type.

Driving without a valid PUC certificate can attract a fine of up to ₹10,000 under Section 190(2) of the Motor Vehicles Act, and insurers may also require a valid PUC at policy renewal.

Visit any government-authorized PUC testing centre — most fuel stations have one. The emission test takes a few minutes and the new certificate is issued on the spot.
