How EMI is calculated
Banks use the reducing-balance formula: EMI = P × r × (1+r)ⁿ ÷ ((1+r)ⁿ − 1), where P is the principal, r the monthly interest rate and n the number of months. A ₹5,00,000 loan at 9.5% for 60 months works out to an EMI of about ₹10,501 — and nearly ₹1.3 lakh in total interest.
Getting a better deal
A larger down payment reduces both EMI and total interest. Shorter tenures raise the EMI but cut interest sharply. Compare the flat rate quoted by some dealers with the reducing rate — a 7% flat rate can equal roughly 12–13% reducing.
