Traffic Signs in India

Indian road signs fall into three families — mandatory signs you must obey, cautionary signs that warn of hazards, and informatory signs that guide you to facilities. Knowing them is essential for the RTO learner's test and everyday safe driving.

Mandatory Signs

Round signs that must be obeyed. Violating a mandatory sign is a punishable offence under the Motor Vehicles Act.

  • Stop

Come to a complete halt and proceed only when safe.

  • Give Way

Slow down and yield to traffic on the main road.

  • No Entry

Entry prohibited for all vehicles from this direction.

  • One Way

Traffic moves only in the direction of the arrow.

  • Speed Limit

Do not exceed the speed shown on the sign.

  • No Overtaking

Overtaking other vehicles is prohibited on this stretch.

  • No Parking

Parking is not allowed; stopping briefly may be permitted.

  • No Horn

Sounding the horn is prohibited — usually near hospitals and schools.

  • Compulsory Turn Left

All vehicles must turn left ahead.

  • No U-Turn

Taking a U-turn is prohibited at this point.

Cautionary Signs

Triangular warning signs that alert you to hazards ahead. Slow down and prepare to react.

Children may be crossing — slow down.

  • Pedestrian Crossing

Zebra crossing ahead; give way to pedestrians.

  • Narrow Bridge

The road narrows over a bridge ahead.

  • Right Hand Curve

Sharp bend to the right — reduce speed.

  • Steep Descent

Downhill gradient ahead; use a lower gear.

  • Slippery Road

Road surface may be slippery — avoid sudden braking.

  • Men at Work

Road work ahead; watch for workers and machinery.

  • Cattle Crossing

Animals may be on the road ahead.

  • Unguarded Level Crossing

Railway crossing without gates ahead — stop, look, then cross.

  • Roundabout Ahead

Prepare to yield to traffic already on the roundabout.

Informatory Signs

Blue rectangular signs that give useful information about facilities, directions and distances.

A hospital is nearby — drive slowly and avoid honking.

  • Petrol Pump

    Fuel station ahead.

  • Parking

    Designated parking area.

  • Bus Stop

Buses halt here; watch for boarding passengers.

  • First Aid Post
