What to Check Before Buying a Used Vehicle

VahanInfo TeamPublished 6 July 2026 • Updated 15 July 20261 min read

A used vehicle can be a great deal or an inherited problem — and the difference usually sits in the paperwork, not the paint. Here's the checklist we recommend before any money changes hands.

1. Verify the RC record

Run the number through RC Search and confirm in the VahanInfo app:

  • The owner name matches the seller's ID.
  • Maker, model, fuel type and registration year match what's advertised.
  • Fitness validity is current (especially for older or commercial vehicles).
  • Blacklist status is clear — no theft or enforcement flags.

2. Check for hypothecation

If a financer's name appears on the RC, the vehicle secures an active loan. Insist on a loan closure letter and bank NOC, and make Form 35 (hypothecation termination) part of the deal. Never pay in full while a bank's charge remains on the record.

3. Clear the challans first

Challans follow the vehicle. Check pending challans and have the seller settle them before the sale — afterwards, they become your negotiation-free problem.

4. Insurance and PUC

Confirm the insurance is alive and note its type — third-party or comprehensive. An expired policy means you're driving uninsured the moment you take delivery. PUC should be current too; both are visible in the VahanInfo app.

5. The physical inspection

  • Cold-start the engine and listen for irregular idle.
  • Check for mismatched paint panels and welding marks (accident history).
  • Match the chassis and engine numbers on the metal against the RC.
  • Look at tyre wear symmetry — uneven wear hints at alignment or suspension damage.
  • Test every electrical item: windows, AC, lights, infotainment.

6. Price and paperwork

Use the EMI calculator if financing, and complete the ownership transfer within 14 days of sale — Forms 29 and 30, plus the state-specific extras. Re-verify the RC a few weeks later to confirm the transfer actually registered.
