How to Check Pending Traffic Challans

VahanInfo TeamPublished 5 June 2026 • Updated 15 July 20261 min read

Since automated enforcement cameras arrived in Indian cities, most challans are issued without the driver ever being stopped. Many owners discover fines only months later — sometimes when selling the vehicle. A regular challan check avoids that surprise.

How e-challans are issued

Traffic cameras detect violations such as over-speeding, red-light jumping, and riding without a helmet. The system reads your number plate, matches it to the RC record, and issues a challan to the registered owner — often with an SMS to the registered mobile number. If your number changed, you may never see that SMS.

Checking challans by vehicle number

  1. Open Challan Search or the VahanInfo app.
  2. Enter the vehicle registration number.
  3. The website shows whether pending challans exist.
  4. Open the VahanInfo app to see the full picture — violation, date, location, amount, and payment status for each challan.

What to do when you find a challan

Pay promptly — most states offer online payment, and delays can escalate the amount or lead to court referral. If you believe the challan is wrong (for example, a misread number plate), most state traffic portals have a grievance option; keep photos or toll receipts that support your case.

Challans and used vehicles

Challans attach to the vehicle's registration, so a used vehicle can carry its previous owner's unpaid fines into your ownership headache. Always run a challan check before completing a purchase, and insist the seller clears dues first. Our used vehicle checklist covers the other records to verify.

Common fines at a glance

The traffic rules and penalties page lists current MV Act fines — from ₹1,000 for riding without a helmet to ₹10,000 for drunk driving or blocking an emergency vehicle. Knowing them is also useful for the RTO learner's test.
