How to Check Vehicle RC Details Online

Every registered vehicle in India has a Registration Certificate (RC) — the official record linking the vehicle to its owner, its RTO, and its compliance documents. Checking RC details takes less than a minute once you know where to look.
What you need
All you need is the vehicle's registration number — the alphanumeric code on the number plate, like GJ05AB1234. The first two letters identify the state (GJ = Gujarat), the digits identify the RTO (05 = Surat), and the rest is the vehicle's unique series.
Step-by-step: checking RC details
- Open the RC Search page or the VahanInfo app.
- Type the registration number without spaces — the form cleans it up automatically.
- Tap Check Vehicle Details.
- Review the basic preview: maker and model, vehicle class and fuel type, and registration month and year.
- For the complete record — owner name, insurance validity, PUC, fitness, RTO details, financer and blacklist status — open the result in the VahanInfo app.
What the key RC fields mean
- Vehicle class — the category the vehicle is registered under, such as Motor Car or Motor Cycle. Commercial classes (taxi, goods carrier) have different tax and permit rules.
- Fitness validity — private vehicles get 15 years initially; commercial vehicles need periodic fitness renewal.
- Hypothecation / financer — if a bank's name appears, the vehicle has an active loan against it.
- Blacklist status — indicates police or RTO flags such as theft records or unpaid dues.
When should you check RC details?
The most important moment is before buying a used vehicle — verify the seller matches the registered owner, the insurance is alive, the PUC is valid, and there is no hypothecation or blacklist entry. It's also worth checking your own vehicle after any RTO transaction (transfer, address change, HP termination) to confirm the record was actually updated. See our guide on what to check before buying a used vehicle for the full checklist.
Why some details are app-only
To protect owner privacy, VahanInfo's website shows only a limited, non-sensitive preview. The complete record — with owner information, validity dates, and challan history — is available in the free Android app, along with PDF reports and expiry reminders.
